Modern Art Obsessed

Does it sound pretentious to say that one of my favorite past-times is strolling through art museums? Oh well, I don't care if it does, because I love it! I think art is so fascinating to me because I am so terrible at it. I can't draw, the only painting I do is my nails (and half the time, I even fuck that up), and the furthest that I've gotten with sculpting is Play-Doh. Despite my failed endeavors, I am an avid appreciator of art, specifically modern art. I love bright colors, bold patterns, and putting random junk together to make a totally kooky and kitschy piece. My favorite artist? Keith Haring.

The earliest memory I have of being exposed to Haring art was on my parent's Christmas CDs, A Very Special Christmas Volumes 1 and 2. It's easy to see why children love his art, with the rounded, dancing figures, barking dogs, and primary color palette. All of these qualities still appeal to me as a 25 year old, but I guess that's just my inner child talking! About a year or so ago, I was walking around the King of Prussia mall and noticed that there was an abundance of Haring-related clothing in the window at Uniqlo. Never have I thought "I must have ALL the things" so quickly in my life. I probably have 4 or 5 graphic tees from the limited edition collection and I love all of them. Today, I'm wearing my Big Apple shirt. I love the gold outlining against the black background, it really brings the art to another dimension.

I could write forever about reasons why I love Keith Haring. I recently bought a book about him and it just solidified why I love him even more: he loved children, stood up for equality in all aspects of his life, and he truly believed in the stories he told through his art. What more can you ask for from an artist?
